Volunteers Make Things Happen!
Midwifery has been around since Old Testament times (Genesis 35:17).

Today, in much of the world, professional midwives are responsible for attending women in labor and birth. In fact, in the countries with the best pregnancy outcomes, midwives are the primary providers of care to pregnant women.

For a lot of US midwives it is very hard to stay a float. Midwives often don't get full price from insurance companies and cash paying clients leave bills unpaid. Women that feel the calling to become a midwife aren't looking to become millionaires, they are filled with an overwhelming desire to make birth as safe and unclinical as possible for all moms.

Although nurse midwives have come along way in their fight to continue delivering babies, they have gradually moved almost completely into hospital settings, usually relinquishing control and autonomy over their practice to physicians and adopting some of the interventive procedures used by them. Traditional midwives still fight for mothers rights to birth their babies where they choose, with whom they chose and to do it without fear of unnecessary intervention.

This freedom to practice without outside control has not been without costs; just to name a few, the midwives have had to confront hostile practice environments and low pay for long hours of work. This is why midwives need our help.

H2H is looking for energetic individuals to help us move ahead.  Opportunities are available regardless of your level of commitment. From volunteering at events, to helping with business organization, public advocacy, administration and writing/editing. Herat 2 Heart Birth Center would be happy to speak to you about current options. For more information, please email us and mention your specific interest.

Remember, change only comes through action.
